Women’s Careers – Beyond Organizational Boundaries

How it started

Having met and got to know each other over a number of years Penny, Emma & Jenny found they had a common belief that there is a mismatch between what is commonly understood as career success versus how women see personal and professional success….

Since setting up Women to Work in 2014 it has been an aspiration of Emma & Jenny’s to be able to make a societal difference around supporting women to reach their personal and professional potential and be able to really make a difference to women in the workplace.

Penny Dick a Professor of Organizational Psychology at Sheffield University Management School wanted to examine whether current understandings of “career” adequately reflected and captured the working and non-working experiences of adult women in the United Kingdom.

They all came together with this shared passion and a desire to make a difference…..

Penny applied and obtained some funding from the British Academy/Leverhulme Small Grants competition to conduct this research and a plan was put in place with research starting in 2019.

To conduct the research Penny attended and interviewed a number of women who had attended Women to Work’s Work Life Discovery Coaching Workshop – a workshop for women that is currently offered free of charge and gives delegates the opportunity to take some time to focus on themselves, what’s important to them and to reflect on their current situation and work and life aspirations, values and importantly to connect with other women and to create an action plan with next steps to move forward.

During the sessions Penny was able to observe the activities and conversations of the attendees and then following this up with a number of interviews enabled her to delve deeply into the women’s own understandings of their ‘career’ and work and life and gain valuable insight that is the basis for the research findings.

The findings have been shared and developed since 2019 and you can take a look at the various different mediums via the links below….
